Bangkok breathed a sigh of relief when Speakerbox returned, this time at Liberty Plaza on Thong Lo road. They occupy the space which was Nothing But The Blues bar – as one chapter came to a close, and another exciting new chapter began. Speakerbox Co-Founder Eddie Mellor is back in Bangkok after a year away, and is doing what he does best – creating memorable musical moments for this great city.
Bangkok’s hardcore music faithful will know Eddie from the previous Speakerbox, at Ratchada Train Market, which closed in 2017. This sent shockwaves throughout the city’s music scene at the time. Eddie’s passion and dedication to the growth of a diverse music culture in Bangkok has touched the lives of many.
Eddie has lived in UK and Australia, but Bangkok is home to him. He moved here when he was 14 years old and so the unbreakable connection was formed.
I always seem to find myself returning to Bangkok. I tend to find more purpose here, especially in the music culture.Eddie Mellor
Eddie has revived Speakerbox in this cozy new space, and got right back to work on their mission. He works alongside his friend, Aom (Co-Founder of Wildest Youth) and together they share a passion for putting on great music shows. What is their mission?
Friendliness, and being welcoming to all. We focus on developing upcoming Original music talents across a wide range of musical genres and welcome cultures with open arms. We also have plenty of fun with cover bands and jam nights. On a day-by-day basis the main aim is to create good times and good memories for everyone who comes through the door.Eddie Mellor
Eddie and Speakerbox have become synonymous with Original music, and they are a home for Original music in the city, where you can go and watch bands from all over the world in their element, expressing their true character and soul.
We want to add to the cause that aims to make Bangkok into a more known musical city/touring destination for bands of all sizes, nationalities, genres, and popularity – a place where visiting artists can be confident of a good crowd.Eddie Mellor
Speakerbox’s program of live music shows is daily and diverse. They support bands no matter what stage of their journey they’re on. You will see big, bustling crowds there some nights, depending on the bands playing. Although smaller, lesser known bands are not very well supported in this city, Eddie is positive about the current state of the music scene here.
The Bangkok live music scene has certainly developed over the years – it’s great to see more festivals occurring as well as more artists from all over the world performing in Bangkok.Eddie Mellor
Following the closure of the first Speakerbox in 2017, Eddie found a home away from home when he returned to the UK. He found Brighton, a cosmopolitan, diverse, thriving city where opportunities are rife for artists and independent businesses. Eddie fell in love with Brighton, so what compelled him to return to Bangkok?
It was a constant concern that the reputation I had gained from Speakerbox was dissolving, and it was always the plan after one or two years to open up shop again. So the time has come.Eddie Mellor
Eddie is a man in the know when it comes to live music in Bangkok, and if you’re ever in need of some inspiration – he’s the man to talk to. He gave me some personal recommendations, which will be going straight in the BKK OX calendar.
Maho Rasop Festival on November 16th/17th – the line up is brilliant – I’m especially excited to see King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Delta Sleep Live in Bangkok on 24th November at De Commune – I saw these guys back in Brighton and they are just awesome, definitely worth checking out.Eddie Mellor
