Bangkok Visionaries: "Gigi" Inspires Peace Through Music In Klong Toey Slum

Music and Art have brought so many people together during our seven years of existence, in an effort to make a positive difference in these children’s lives.

The powerful, life changing impact of Music and Art is being utilised to its full potential by Geraldine “Gigi” Nemrod at Klong Toey Music Program. Gigi runs a non-profit organisation in the heart of Klong Toey’s thriving, but impoverished “70 Rai” slum community. KTMP provides a safe space for children (over 7 years old) to achieve a sense of peace, community and personal growth through Music and Visual Arts.

Gigi has played music all her life, and now, inspired by Playing for Change, she uses music to positively impact the lives of children in Klong Toey.

We hope that there is a direct impact on the community by providing the children with a safe space where they can spend their free time, learn, grow and have fun in the process.

Each brick of the shophouse is purposeful. Each room is home to groups of children engaged in music, and thanks to ongoing funding from Playing for Change Foundation and other private donations, the children have an impressive array of musical equipment at their disposal.

So far – we are not sustainable. We heavily depend on funds and donations. Ideally in the future, we would like to be able to generate our own income, through selling merch and providing services.

Students attending the program (there are currently 50 students who attend weekly) are given free classes (mostly Music, but also Art and English), and then rehearse for musical performances. Thanks to Gigi’s tireless work, the children get opportunities to perform at venues around the city, such as Alliance Française de Bangkok.

Emotional outlets are important, and certainly more so for these kids who are growing up in such a difficult environment. They also learn valuable skills that give them confidence, an identity, a sense of belonging to a community.

Gigi has a plan for KTMP, which includes a new “Career Advisor” program, which will take the level of support KTMP provides to the next level.

We can open the kids’ minds to what is available out there in terms of professional activities. This will be the first step to identify what our kids want to do in life, and to support them in achieving their dreams.

The environment at KTMP is relaxed, and happy. She allows the children to “follow their own rhythm” and keeps everything flexible, allowing for regular (and necessary) breaks for relaxing and chatting with friends.

It’s a community, and thus the children are comfortable, happy and their teachers reflect the same attitude. Everyone is there to learn, and grow.

As we grow and get more visibility, we will get more sponsors on board and that is how we can expand. As soon as we’re registered, we will have access to more consequent funds and we’ll be able to hire people on the management side, which will help take KTMP to the next level.

Gigi is more than just smart, organized and passionate about these children and their future. Gigi has been doing this for seven years, which demonstrates that no matter how hard times get, or whatever changes are on the horizon, she will be ready to adapt, and overcome all obstacles.

There will be tears, there will be sweat, doubts, obstacles, failures. There will be times where you will want to give up, more times than you can count, but the most important thing is to always move forward.

Gigi left her stable, secure job as a Scientist at Mahidol University to build this musical shophouse in Klong Toey, an after school sanctuary for many children. Gigi has found something in life worth fighting for, through thick and thin, and these children of Klong Toey are that something.

Even when you lose faith, just keep moving towards your goal and things will fall into place again at some point. And there will be love, and support, and dreams, again.
